Here’s an idea related to the cogwheels and the Mesoamerican calendar.

Interlocking stone cogwheels with calendar pictograms

Interlocking stone cogwheels with calendar pictograms

This was a seed concept for the cover book #1.  The temple is self-evident, but the cogwheels derive from the interlocking days of the Mesoamerican calendar in which each month has 20 named days that mesh with thirteen numbered days.  A more sophisticated version of this might have stone cogwheels with the graphical symbols of the named days around the edge.
